Woburn is the former suburb of Scarborough located in eastern Toronto, Canada. This neighbourhood is bordered by Highway 401 and light industry to the north, Lawrence Avenue to the south, Orton Park Road to the east, and McCowan Road to the west.

Woburn has so many parklands at the south and eastern part. Local landmarks include the Scarborough Centennial Recreational Centre, Centennial College, the Scarborough Golf and Country Club and the newly renovated Cedarbrae Mall.

Homes

Woburn is a family oriented and peaceful neighbourhood comprised of tree-lined streets that contain a sound selection of reasonable priced homes. Woburn houses built in the 1950’s to 1960’s period. Townhouses, detached, split-level houses, two-storey homes, and bungalows are the style of houses found in Woburn. There is also a good quantity of rental apartment buildings at the Lawrence Avenue East.

History

Elderslie was the originally named of Woburn. In 1856, this name was changed. A post office was also opened in the Woburn Inn. Thomas Dowswell was the owner of the Woburn Inn, who hailed from a small town named Woburn in England.

Historically, the Woburn Inn was significant because this was the meeting place for the Scarborough Municipal Council. Until 1921, they continued to arrange their meetings at the Woburn Inn, when the chambers of council were moved to Kingston Road.

In the 1950’s, when the actual urbanization of Woburn took place, at that time the historical Woburn Inn was shatter to make room for the Painted Post Plaza.

Shopping

The Cedar Heights Plaza features with large Chinese supermarket, a discount department store, a pharmacy, a hardware store, bargain stores, a sports store, and medical offices, a family restaurant and Indian food shop. This plaza located on the north-east corner of Lawrence Avenue and Markham Road.

The Painted Post Plaza contains a small sizes stores including a hairstylist, a bank, a beauty salon, a convenience store, a dry cleaner, an East Indian restaurant and a fish and chips restaurant. This is located at the corner of Markham Road and Painted Post Drive.

But, the Ellesmere Road is lined with many small shopping plazas, factory outlets and discount warehouses that are open to the public. There is also a bingo emporium and a large garden center situated along this shopping corridor.

Entertainment and Recreation

The Cedarbrook Community Centre and Park, located in the Daphne Road, is set in an alcoholic ravine setting. The modern community centre offers scenic views of the adjacent parkland at its second-floor ballroom and sundeck. The Cedar Ridge Creative Centre is a visual arts centre for artists. It is located at 225 Confederation Drive.

The Scarborough Centennial Recreation Centre has two indoor ice arenas. It is located at 1967 Ellesmere Road. The main arena is used for hockey leagues and another is used for figure skating and pleasure skating. This centre has also a large auditorium with a two hundred-person seating capacity.

Getting Around

The Woburn is served by TTC bus routes. These include the 54 Lawrence East, 102 Markham Road, 9 Bellamy, and the 16 McCowan. The area is also served by three bus routes on Ellesmere Road, and the 133 Neilson. The Woburn is also served by Highway 401 and this runs through Toronto from east-to-west.
